Hello Parents!

It is hard to believe it is 2017 already! The blizzard only added to the excitement of the New Year! On Friday the kids came in all fired up from the snow, this week is sure to be fun, too, now that we have a lot of the white stuff. One very helpful thing you can do is to send in a pair of sneakers for your child to wear so they don’t have to clunk around in their boots all day. it is also helpful to send their snow pants (if they don’t wear them) in a separate bag. Thank you!

Even though it was a short week we were still very busy and even finished another read aloud, “Because of Winn Dixie.” This week I will be sending your child home with an Eric Carle book for you to read together. I have so many wonderful books in my classroom and it is nearly impossible to share them all with the kiddos. This is hopefully a fun way to share some of my favorite authors with the students and provide an opportunity for you and your child to have some read aloud time together. Please see the handout that is with your child’s book for more of an explanation.

Language Arts: this week we began our third unit in Reading. The overall theme is creativity, which is perfect for this group! Our spelling pattern focused on the long e and the class did a fantastic job on the spelling tests! We also talked about antonyms (opposites) and reviewed what verbs are. The comprehension skill with the story, “Pearl and Wagner: Two Good Friends,” was author’s purpose. There is no school this upcoming Friday, so the spelling test will be on Thursday instead.

Math: we continued working on place value and looking at numbers through 1,000. This week focused on showing numbers in many different forms. These included expanded form, unit form, number form, and word form. We will be making word walls to help with these different terms. Showing the numbers these different ways helps the kids build a very strong foundation for what a number means and is actually worth. I am excited to see how strong their number sense is. This week I will be sending home math homework from the math program.

Other news and information:

·      On Friday we said goodbye to Mrs. Tonti who is retiring. The class wrote her letters and drew her pictures. We are very sad to see her leave our school, but are very excited for her to begin her new adventure as a grandma!

·      This upcoming weekend is a long one. The students do not have school Friday or Monday!

·      Please pay your child’s lunch bill.

Have a great week!

Megan McDonald
