October 4 is Curriculum Night!
I hope to see all of you on October 4 from 6-7:30 as I go over the first grade curriculum.

Hello Parents!

What a crazy few days with the weather! I hope the class will be able to get out for recess this week. We were very busy in here last week. Here is what we were up to:

Language Arts: we have been working on our routines that include writing in our journals, responding to read alouds, working with partners, and different activities they will do independently throughout the year. We also read two of our Scholastic News. This week I will begin assessing your child’s reading. During this time they will be working on sight word activities, practicing their handwriting, and working on the iPads in the Lexia Core 5 app.

Math: we learned more of our tools and practiced using them while playing games with partners. They all went on Dreambox on the iPads, too. I will be sending home information about both Dreambox and Lexia in case your child would like to get extra practice at home.

I am sure your child has been exhausted by the end of week. They are all working so hard during the school day to learn our routines and it’s a lot of new information and jobs for them to remember. Please help them as best as you can by sticking to your routine and being as consistent as possible.

Next week I will begin sending home homework. Please make sure your child has a quiet place that they can complete their homework. In first grade homework is sent home to reinforce what we are working on in the classroom. It should not take your child longer than 10-15 minutes to complete. It should also be completed without assistance. If your child is unable to complete it on their own, that is important information for me. Please do no help them (except for reading directions to them if they need it) with the actual work. Thank you for your cooperation with that!

I am having a great time getting to know all of the kiddos in the class. They are all working so hard!

A couple of questions I have had come my way:

·     Will my child be able to take violin lessons at the school? This hasn’t been determined yet. In the past first graders have been able to take lessons, but I am not 100% sure they will be this year. I will let you know once I know.

·     Can I come and have lunch with my child? Absolutely! Lunch is from 12:30-12:50. Please be sure to sign in at the office. Our lunch tables are pretty packed, but you can pull up a chair.

·     Can my child have a water bottle? YES! I encourage the kids to have a water bottle at their desk.

Feel free to email or call me anytime! My email is mmcdonald@mvyps.org and my phone number is 508-627-3316 ext. 122.

                                                          Have a great week!
