Welcome to 6th Grade

This website will be very helpful to you and your parents/guardians throughout the school year. You will find much information here on a weekly basis!
Achieve your goals in 2012
Write your goals: It has been said that goals that are not written down are just wishes. Written goals will give you clarity of vision and a sense of purpose. Be specific when you write your goals. Prioritize your goals and include dates and sub-goals to measure achievement over time.
Review and revise your goals: Make it a habit to review your goals on a regular basis. Regular exposure to your written goals will give you a long-term perspective and the motivation to achieve. Additionally, it will afford you the opportunity to revise your goals should your circumstances change.

February Independent Book Project
*******2 Parts******
1st part- Your'e cooking up a storm
This month you child has choosen a story that takes place in a different culture than ours.
They are traveling aroung the world, maybe in Burma, Cuba, El Salvador, or Afghanistan.
If their story takes place in France, you should be looking at a French recipe. We will celebrate February's Independent read by sampling foods from all the cultures you have been reading about. Due Feb 21st

Here is a sample from last years feast.

2nd Part- Cultural Passport
Your child will be creating a passport for their character (protagonist) in their story.

All Information regarding this project is the File Cabinet below.

What we are reading in class
So Far From the Bamboo Grove

Yoko Kawashima Watkins’s autobiographical novel is a testament to love of family and to the endurance of the human spirit. It provides readers with an inside look at the fears and hopes and dreams of a family caught in the web of war.
So Far from the Bamboo Grove begins in northern Korea in July 1945, near the end of World War II, and ends in April 1946 in Japan. By 1945 Japan, Germany, Italy, and the other Axis countries were losing the war against Great Britain, the United States, the Soviet Union, and the other Allied countries.
We are now Scrapbooking!!
You child will be bringing home their groups scrapbook to add to it. Take a look and ask questions!!!
Who is their character? What was their role in the book?

Your child will be writing about their passion in a "How To Book".
1st they have to find which of these categories they fit into

If a teacher told me to revise, I thought that meant my writing was a broken-down car that needed to go to the repair shop. I felt insulted. I didnt realize the teacher was saying, "Make it shine. Its worth it. "Now I see revision as a beautiful word of hope. It's a new vision of something. It means you don't have to be perfect the first time. What a relief!

Social Studies: You were each sent home with a bank form to become familiar with. You were given one of two sheets. Your job on Monday will be to record your peers' business ideas and make a decision to either APPROVE the business idea or DENY the idea.
WHAT bank management team are you a part of?
A.) Bank Finance: YOU will either agree to fund the loan or deny the loan. You are MOST interested in those ideas written down on your sheet. Does the business spend more $$ on paying the C.E.O., C.F.O. and C.O.O.? Does the company spend too much on distribution? etc...
BECOME FAMILIAR WITH BOTH SIDES OF THE SHEET YOU WERE GIVEN!
B.) Bank Investors: YOU will listen to the business idea. What makes this idea unique? What is their prime competition (who else makes the same product)? As a group, would you be interested in helping the business get off the ground?
BECOME FAMILIAR WITH BOTH SIDES OF THE SHEET YOU WERE GIVEN!

Wordle is a toy for generating “word clouds” from text that you provide. The clouds give greater prominence to words that appear more frequently in the source text. You can tweak your clouds with different fonts, layouts, and color schemes. The images you create with Wordle are yours to use however you like. You can print them out, or save them to the Wordle gallery to share with your friends.
