4G NEWS

January 20, 2012

Dear Parents,

I hope you enjoyed the three day weekend!  It definitely started out with some wild weather!  Here’s what we have been working on in 4G over the past two weeks.....

Math-

We continued our focus on naming angles and triangles. We learned how to name triangles by their sides (scalene, isosceles, right) and by their angles (acute, right, obtuse).  We also practiced how to measure an angle with a protractor.  In addition, we focused on learning how to find the perimeter and area of a triangle.  We began our exploration of how to find the area of triangles by reviewing how to find the area of a quadrilateral/rectangle.  We used our knowledge to determine that finding the area of a triangle is the same as finding the area of a rectangle but divided by two.

Reading/Social Studies-

Last week we finished reading Finding the Titanic, read the story Happy Birthday, Dr. King, and took our midyear GRADE Reading Assessment. The information from the GRADE will help to guide our instruction over the next few weeks.  This week we began some MCAS readings.  We focused on looking for evidence in the text when answering multiple choice questions, and giving clear details and inferences when answering an open response question.

Writing-

We are currently working on our next personal narrative.  This narrative is about a time we had a great adventure! We also spent time last week reviewing some of the writing tricks we have learned this year. We created an acronym to help us remember all the writing tricks we can use as we edit/revise our writing.  Our theme is BATMAN because he is a great detective which is what we need to be as we look to improve our writing. Our acronym is....

S - SHOW NOT TELL

A - ADVERBS

V - VERBS

E - EXTRA-ENTERTAIN (IDIOMS)

D - DIALOGUE

B - BEGINNING OF SENTENCES (and BANG)

A - ADJECTIVES

T - TRANSITIONS

S - SIMILES

! - PUNCTUATION
