WELCOME BACK! and A HAPPY NEW READING YEAR to ALL!
We are underway with our exciting classroom curriculums in grades K-4 using our core reading program published by Houghton Mifflin. This researched based series takes into account the key components of reading set forth by the National Reading Panel:
1.Oral language, phonemic awareness, concepts of print and decoding skills
    2. Fluency and rate of reading
    3. Vocabulary and background knowledge
    4. Comprehension
Motivation, independent reading, writing and connections to you at home are other important factors to support your child’s learning.

Parents are their child’s first and most important teacher. Here are some ways to help students at home:
* Read with your child every day
*Talk with your child
*Spend time with your child to play games or visit the library
* Establish routines especially for homework time
* Help reinforce the basics that are the foundations for early literacy: name, address, letters, spelling,            numbers, math facts
*Praise your child when she or he does something right to encourage good behavior
* Be patient: we all learn differently and at different rates
*Be involved with your child’s school and his/her teachers. Communication is key!

I have been helping classroom teachers with the core program and have consulted with them to make the transitions from one grade to the next go smoothly. Some assessments have been given and parents will be notified about specific services for students I see. You can also reach me at 508-627-3316 EXT 118 or by email: e_bates@mvyps.org
