Dear Parents of Sixth Graders, September 11, 2008
Greetings! Hello!
I wanted to introduce myself to all of you, if I have not had the pleasure of meeting you personally in the hall at the Edgartown School. My name is Kathy Smith, (not the famous aerobics instructor). I am presently a student teacher with Miss Meister until December 12 with your sixth graders.
I am pursuing my Masters in Education, at the Union Institute University’s satellite in Montpelier, VT. in Environmental Education with an emphasis on place-based pedagogy, simply “hands-on” learning and discovery. With our curriculum this term, we are integrating “field site” exploration with Felix Neck and the Farm Institute and our local backyards to learn about the endless biodiversity in our world. In other words, we are encouraging your children to become environmental stewards of their communities and to understand “sustainability for our planet earth” into their classroom.
I am married, have two children, two black Labrador retrievers, and a broken-coat Jack Russell. I have had the pleasure of becoming acquainted with your children in the past few days. They are curious and are transitioning well in school. I look forward to meeting you at the Edgartown School Open House on Wednesday, September 16.
Ask your children about the “Random Question” that we ask them in science everyday! Already, they seem engaged and want to learn!
Sincerely,
Kathy Smith
