Hello Soon to Be Fifth Graders!

I hope you enjoy the summer break and make some great memories with family and friends.  I am looking forward to getting to know each one of you.  We are going to have an awesome year!  Fifth grade is an exciting time….lockers, switching classes, new specials.  It might seem scary at first, but you’ll do great.  Ms. Gelinas and I are always here to help.  

I will be your English Language Arts and Social Studies teacher.  In ELA we will be using our brand new, island wide reading program by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.  We will also reading some great novels together including two of my favorites, Wonder (realistic fiction) and Number the Stars (historical fiction). In addition, you will be responsible for reading a minimum of one book per month of your choice and completing a book test by a due date.  We will pick the books together in the library and will read across a variety of genres.  

We will also read a great deal of non-fiction together.  Some materials we will use are Scholastic News (thanks to the Edgartown PTA!), Wordly Wise (Vocabulary Instruction), and our Social Studies materials.  

Our writing times will be a blast!  We will be focusing on 4 kinds of writing this year:  Narrative, Persuasive, Informational, and Text Evidence Responses.  

In Social Studies, you will learn so much as we study US History throughout the year.  We will start the year with a brief introduction to the Native Americans and European Exploration.  

Summer Reading Work:  Please read a minimum of two books of your choice that are at your level and complete one poster to advertise one of your books. Any additional posters are extra credit.  The poster is due in the first week of school.  Please review the rubric below BEFORE starting the poster.  Be creative and have fun! I can’t wait to hear about the great books you’ve read!

Olá, em breve alunos da quinta série!

Espero que você aproveite as férias de verão e crie ótimas lembranças com a família e os amigos. Estou ansioso para conhecer cada um de vocês. Teremos um ano incrível! A quinta série é uma época emocionante… armários, troca de classe, novos especiais. Pode parecer assustador no começo, mas você se sairá bem. A Sra. Gelinas e eu estamos sempre aqui para ajudar.

Serei seu professor de Língua Inglesa e Estudos Sociais. Em ELA, leremos alguns grandes romances juntos, incluindo dois dos meus favoritos, Wonder (ficção realista) e Number the Stars (ficção histórica). Além disso, você será responsável por ler no mínimo um livro por mês de sua escolha e concluir um teste de livro até a data de vencimento. Escolheremos os livros juntos na biblioteca e leremos uma variedade de gêneros.

Também leremos muitas obras de não ficção juntos. Alguns materiais que usaremos são Scholastic News (obrigado ao Edgartown PTA!), Wordly Wise (Instrução de vocabulário) e nossos materiais de Estudos Sociais.

Quaisquer cartazes adicionais são crédito extra. Por favor, leia a rubrica antes de terminar o pôster.. Seja criativo e divirta-se! Mal posso esperar para ouvir sobre os ótimos livros que você leu!

School Supplies

It is important that you are set up for success this year. Please plan on having these supplies upon your return to school.

These are the supplies for ALL FIFTH GRADERS regardless of homeroom teacher.

Hello fabulous 5th graders!  We are excited for the start of school.  Here is a list of supplies that you will need for the school year.  Please try to acquire your supplies before the first day of school!  We are excited for a new year of learning!  

GENERAL SUPPLIES –

• Homework Folder (to be used for all subjects)
• Pencil Pouch- to hold the following supplies
  • Pencils  (We recommend buying a few boxes.  Just put a few in your pouch. You can keep the rest at home or in your locker.)
  • Erasers (pencil-top are great)
  • Small pencil sharpener
  • (2) Ultra Fine Point Sharpies (Black)
  • 3 Highlighters (one yellow, one green, one pink)
  • Fine tip dry erase marker 
  • (2) One Subject Notebooks (One for ELA and one for Social Studies)
  • Two 3-ring binders (1 or 2 inches – thick binders will not fit in classroom cubbies)
  • (2 packages) Lined paper that is three-hole punched. The kind with the plastic edge prevents the hole punches from ripping.
  • One folder for loose papers in class

• 3 marcadores (um amarelo, um verde, um rosa)
• Marcador de apagar a seco de ponta fina
• (2) Cadernos de uma disciplina (um para ELA e um para Estudos Sociais)
• Duas pastas de 3 argolas (2,5 cm ou 5 cm – pastas grossas não cabem nos armários da sala de aula)
• (2 pacotes) Papel pautado com três furos. O tipo com borda de plástico evita que os furos rasguem.
• Uma pasta para papéis soltos em sala de aula

Reading Expectations

Independent reading will be part of your nightly homework in fifth grade.

• Be sure to read a minimum of 20 minutes per night.

• You will read a minimum of one free choice book per month (at your level) and complete a book test on that book
• Due dates for book completion will be posted throughout the year.

• Add to your sequence of event Brain Frame nightly.
