News:
Dear Second Grader and Family,
Hello and welcome to 2D 2026-27! I hope you are enjoying summer to the maximum! School starts in a couple weeks on September 8th and I am so looking forward to getting to know you as we spend the next ten months together in the classroom. This year will be my 19th year teaching, 13th year at the Edgartown School, 7th as a 2nd grade teacher! I love 2nd grade for many reasons including the uniqueness of each class and am eager to see what this year brings. I am thrilled to announce Ms. Carly Uva as our amazing assistant teacher.
We believe that every learner is diverse in their learning style and we are dedicated to steering our students towards their learning goals with the appropriate scaffolding. This year we will begin by building a strong classroom community through learning routines which all start with our personal goals or hopes & dreams. Students, start thinking about what your academic hope and dream is for 2nd grade, ie what is something you want to get better at in reading or math or writing… Also, for the first day of school, I ask that you bring a magnet from home that will live in the classroom all year as your personal marker for when you are in school. If you do not have a magnet, I have one you can borrow :)
We will learn a lot this year! We will become stronger mathematicians, explore science and STEAM, hone our penmanship as well as shape ourselves as authors, strengthen our social skills, read every day and analyze texts, and have a lot of fun as we learn and grow together as a community!
Parents/ Guardians, throughout the school year we will be sending home notices with updates and other important information in the homework folder that will come home on day one. Please check this folder every day after school for these and read through them and empty them out daily/ return anything in the ‘return to school’ side. Sometimes the folders will be empty, but we still ask that students get into the habit of bringing them back and forth every day in their backpack, we will need your support at home in this effort. Another source for the “goings on of 2D” will be our webpage on the school website at edgartownschool.org. This is where we will be posting important upcoming dates, pictures, schedules, and more including a quick questionnaire that I am asking all parents to fill out prior to school starting so we can hit the ground running. Some families have already taken the initiative to fill those out!
Throughout the year if you would like to meet or ask any questions, please email me. During the week the best times to reach me are before school between 7:00am-8:00am, or after school. I check my email often so that is a great way to get a hold of me, but I seldom check it during the busy school day, so please call the office with urgent messages. Please send important notes in the homework folder (ie special pick up arrangements, early dismissals, etc.). If we do not see each other before the first day of school, see you on Tuesday the 8th at 8:10 in the hallway of room 136 for our first handshake. I am so excited to meet you!
Sincerely,
~Mrs. (Summer) DeSouza
