Hello and Happy March,
I feel like it was a great week in the classroom. I am hopeful the sickness that has been impacting our attendance will soon disappear especially with the warmer days ahead
.
This week we continued decomposing 3 digit numbers and worked to shift 10 and 100 (aka borrow or regroup) as we work towards 3 digit subtraction. The class is doing great with this so far and I can see a solid foundation in place value has really helped them build this new concept.
In reading we started module 7 and our essential question is: how do our experiences shape our lives? We learned about the lives of some inspirational people such as Helen Keller and Anne Carroll Moore. Our phonics focus was rabbit words–the rule states that when a word is composed of the vccv pattern (such as the word rabbit), then you often divide the syllable between the two consonants. When we learn syllables it helps to break apart and read unfamiliar words. The word rabbit would be broken like this rab / bit, composed of two closed syllables.
In Writer’s Workshop we wrapped up note taking and will use those notes to write a class piece on orca whales next week. The students show great curiosity and bring such rich prior knowledge to non-fiction, it is truly enjoyable to teach and learn with them. We are working towards their own research projects, stay tuned!
In library, music and art the 2nd grade unit: Art Around the World has begun where the students have started their journey around the world where they will stop and learn about each continent over the next few weeks. We are also learning about the continents in the classroom and whaling is at our heels as well!
March is reading month, continued daily reading is always important!
Thank you for reading, and looking forward to a healthy week ahead,
~Summer

Hi! Welcome! I am your 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. DeSouza. I was born and raised on Martha’s Vineyard and care deeply about this island and our community. I love the beach, hikes in nature, teaching and learning. I have two amazing daughters, a wonderful husband, and a pup named Rusty. I can’t wait to meet you all and get to know you. ❤️
