Mrs. Summer DeSouza
Welcome to 2D!

News:
April 28, 2025
Hello All! I hope you all have had productive and restful vacations. I can’t believe we have under two months of school left! Pretty soon the ABC countdown will begin. In 2nd grade we are flexible with the countdown and I don’t send home a list of 26 activities, but I will keep you posted on anything special we will be doing. There is a lot coming up so please mark your calendars:
Parent Teacher conferences April 29th, May 3rd and May 5th (please sign up if you haven’t already!)
Field Trip to the New Bedford Whaling Museum Thursday, May 29th (details to come)
ArtAround the World for 2D Friday, May 30th 10:45-11:30
Chappy Trip with the Trustees of Reservation June 5th (details to come)
Classroom News:
With our informational unit all wrapped up, we will move into our final of three writing units: opinion writing. We will explore how to craft a persuasive writing piece with a beginning, a middle that states reasons and examples, and finally a conclusion.
We will have our preliminary egg drop in the coming weeks where the students will be given one piece of tape and sheet of newspaper to support an egg as it is dropped from the top of the stairway down into the lobby. Later in the spring we will have our official egg drop where we will ask you to construct an egg drop contraption at home. Stay tuned for these dates.
In math we are continuing to subtract with three digit numbers. We have worked on using place value to solve addition and subtraction problems involving 3 digits and will also be using an open number line this week.
In reading this week we will learn about consonant patterns kn, wr, gn, and mb that each contain a silent letter. Students are continuing to meet in daily reading groups for catered instruction.
Thank you for your continued support at home with nightly reading and math fact practice!
~Summer

Hi! Welcome! I am your 2nd grade teacher, Mrs. DeSouza. I was born and raised on Martha’s Vineyard and care deeply about this island and our community. I love the beach, hikes in nature, teaching and learning. I have two amazing daughters, a wonderful husband, and a pup named Rusty. Our assistant teacher is Ms. Brooke Bulawka, she is a MA certified teacher herself and has experience in grades k-8. We can’t wait to meet you all and get to know you. ❤️
