What a fun-filled week! Math night was a raving success and I am happy to report that 2nd grade had the highest number of students in attendance per grade level! I was delighted to see so many 2D families.

This week we finished up a 4 week session with our Mindful Movement teacher Jen, see photo attached. We loved the mindfulness and awareness she helped bring out in ourselves and hope to see her back in the fall! Thank you Jen D!

We wrapped up our animal research, clay animals and dioramas which you will see coming home today. I am attaching some pictures so you can witness the hard work that went into these projects. They begged for more time to write–proud teacher moment! The students were so enthused at the idea of publishing their own books. Mrs. Convery, our librarian, made actual barcodes for their books for students to check out in the library! Our next unit is opinion writing which we will delve into after break.

In math we assessed skills in 3 digit subtraction this week and will continue to weave this into our math lessons as the year comes to an end. It is a tricky concept and we are trying to build a solid foundation in place value understanding before moving to the algorithm (when you stack and “borrow” aka shift). I reminded the students that if it’s not making full sense yet, it is okay because they will continue working on it as they progress through life.

In science our scarlet runner seeds are sprouting. They will grow red flowers that the hummingbirds love and the beans can be eaten, but not the leaves! We also had our first egg-drop on Thursday, the “preliminary egg drop” where students are given one sheet of newspaper, 24″ of masking tape and about 15 minutes to fashion a contraption to protect their egg. Unfortunately, with those limited supplies, no egg survived (which is the typical result!). However,  we will have our second and true egg drop in June. You may start brainstorming and building as soon as you want at home! More details will be coming as we near June.

We also filled the jar again–that was super fast! This group is really strong in their routines and I am so proud (again)! For our celebration this week–we made oobleck after learning about solids and liquids.

I hope you all have restful, recharging and relaxing breaks! See you on Monday the 28th!
