Great week for us here in Edgartown!
With less snow on the ground, we are closer to getting our playground project back on track.
As March Madness and Literacy Month get underway, our school is planning some special reading activities and events throughout the month. More information will be shared soon. Many classrooms welcomed “Mystery Readers” today who visited and shared their favorite books. We are also working on planning a community read-aloud day later in the month.
Please continue to encourage and talk about reading with your child. It is such an important part of everyone’s learning journey—not just in school, but in life. You might even create some special reading routines or family reading time over the next few weeks to celebrate reading and the many doors it opens for us all.
End-of-Day Pick-Up Reminders
Due to safety concerns, we are not able to have students meet cars beyond the front crosswalk line at the end of the day. Please know we are working to move the line forward as quickly as possible. Most days, everyone is in their cars by 2:50.
The snowbanks have created additional safety concerns, especially when students are not following the designated routes for both pick-up and walking to the Boys & Girls Club. If your child walks to the Boys & Girls Club (K–8), please remind them to follow the assigned route and directions from staff. We will have our school SRO and staff overseeing the back parking next week. I will also be meeting with all of our students who go to the Boys and Girls Club before they leave on Monday and remind them of designated routes they need to take as they walk over as well as the safety concerns that have occurred due to not following the school plans.

We had a wonderful Community Meeting this morning with many moments to celebrate, all centered on our students and staff. We truly have a special school community, and it’s inspiring to see the way our students support one another and celebrate each other’s successes.
Our first graders from Mrs. Searle’s class wrote and presented a heartfelt poem to our very own Detective Townes in recognition of SRO Appreciation Day. Many third and fifth graders also wrote thank-you notes and letters of appreciation for all he does for our school. We are fortunate to live in a town that prioritizes safety and values strong collaboration between the police department and our schools. Detective Townes is a known and respected member of both our school and the entire Edgartown community.
Our eighth and second graders, from Ms. Cunningham’s and Mr. Story’s classes, partnered to share information about accomplished individuals from across the country in recognition of Black History Month. Our second graders demonstrated impressive presentation skills in front of the entire school community.
Mrs. Majkowski’s fourth grade class introduced and connected to our newest core value, Perseverance. They shared real-life examples and words of encouragement about how we push through challenges, and they reminded us that everyone faces hard things at different times in their lives.
Mr. Nascimento and his music students performed their own version of “Don’t Stop the Feeling” on the ukuleles while the audience clapped along together.
We ended our Community Meeting with several rounds of tug-of-war. This popular activity has been requested all year, and it certainly delivered the smiles and laughter we were aiming for. There may be a few sore muscles heading home today!
Congratulations to Jake Stanton for winning this year’s Edgartown Spelling Bee. He will represent our school at the all-island competition and may advance to the state and national levels. Way to go, Jake!
Next week is winter break. I hope you enjoy this special time with your children. We will be sanitizing the building to ensure a healthy and happy return on March 2nd.
Have a great week!

Happy Friday Edgartown families,
Lots to celebrate and acknowledge this week.
PTA– thank you for the classroom treat bags of extra classroom supplies today. It’s been quite the flu/cold season so these thoughtful treats put smiles on all our staff’s faces.
7th Graders created many memories as they traveled together to NH for their annual Ski Trip. It was so great to see the smiles, listen to the laughter and collaboration as they, skied, skated, played games, went bowling, ate in restaurants, jumped around Sky Zone etc… The Edgartown students shined in how they behaved and participated on this trip. I really enjoyed being a part of this Edgartown tradition. Here are photos from the trip!
The Great Annual Sidewalk Sale is this Weekend! Please stop by our gym this weekend(10-4 both Sat and Sun) to support our local businesses. Our 8th graders will also be there providing snacks and smiles. Click here for more information.
Remember No School on Monday due to Presidents Day. We look forward to seeing everyone Tuesday morning.
Next Friday, February 20th, our Fun Run and Community Meeting will have a “Buddy Team” theme. See the below message from our 8th grade Student Council:

Each buddy group has been assigned a color to wear on Friday, 2/20.

The new MV Superintendent has been decided! Please click on the link below to read about our new superintendent of schools. I look forward to working with Mrs Jamie Curley as she begins her new position this upcoming July. Her background and experience will allow our schools to continue to grow and shine in the future. The heart of our island is its incredible children, who represent the future of this special place we proudly call home. It is impressive to see the level of commitment and time from across the island for our schools and its leadership as the new superintendent search was run. Please click here to view the article on the Martha’s Vineyard Times.
Edgartown School Report Card– Below is last year’s school report card sent out from DESE. Please know we will continue to celebrate the areas of student success, as well as determine where more support and attention are needed with areas of focus. Please reach out with any questions.

Happy Friday Edgartown families,
The snow has brought continued excitement this week as students head outside during recess. For some of our students the snow has been a novelty and for many people, big and small, this amount of snow hasn’t been seen in a long time. Potentially we are looking at a bit more of this cold weather and are putting together a bin of extra recess snowgear: boots, snowpants and jackets etc.. If by chance you have outgrown/extra snow gear please send it to school and we will add it to the “snowgear” bin. At our staff meeting we have determined two new recess rules: no throwing snow at people and no destroying snow sculptures others have built. We hope the kids enjoy these outdoor memories from the winter of 2026!
Tonight our 8th graders are hosting their annual auction event at the PA Club in Oak Bluffs. If you are looking for something to do from 6-8 please stop by and support our 8th graders as they fundraise for their end of the year trip. Thank you to all the 8th grade families who worked hard collecting donation items, and thank you to everyone in the school community and the town for all the generous donations. I will update everyone next week on the amount of funds raised from this event. Big shout out to Melanie Brown,MaryEllen Guyther and of course Gina Debettencourt for all the event preparation.
Great job by our 5th graders. I learned a good amount about improv today. Not easy getting up on stage and performing- I am proud of the students for putting their best effort into this opportunity with Lucas Nascimento and Barbara Swift.
IGI will be offering free lunch kits for families to help bridge the nutrition gap while school is out during February School Break.
Families can order customized lunch kits through an online form. The order form will be open on Monday, February 9, at 5pm and close on Friday, February 13, at 12pm.
Orders will be available for pick up on Friday, February 20, from 3-5pm at the IGI Kitchen (14 A Street, Edgartown, MA 02539), located across from the RMV in the Airport Business Park.
For additional information and the link to the order form, visit: Community Lunch.
Report cards will be sent home in backpacks next Wednesday, February 11th. Please reach out to your child’s teacher with any questions.
Next Wednesday, February 11th is a NOON DISMISSAL due to professional development for staff. The Boys and Girls Club will follow their 2:45-6:00 typical time.
Our 3rd graders will be performing next Thursday Feb. 12th at 1:45 in the cafe. They have been working hard practicing their story theater with Barbara Swift and Lucas Nascimento.
7th Grade Ski Trip will be next Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. If you have any questions or concerns please reach out to Kate Campbell or Pam Alwardt.
Valentine’s Day may be celebrated next Friday February 13th(more typical for younger grades). Teachers will communicate with families any special activities that may happen. Please make sure to read the message from Nurse Curelli as we need to follow food safety guidelines in everything we share within classrooms.
Next weekend, February 14-15 from 10-4 please come and support our local businesses at their annual Sidewalk Sale in our school gym. This event is a fundraiser for our 8th grade students with the sales of the pastries and coffee and the booth rentals.
Fun Run and Community Meeting have been rescheduled for February 20th starting at 8:30. The 7th graders will be on the ski trip and didn’t want to miss our monthly school meeting.
Below is a helpful link from DESE with K-8 grade level standards as well as some user friendly language for families. The teachers use these state standards to drive instruction throughout the school year. If you have any questions about specific standards or areas of focus please contact your child’s teacher.

Barbara Reynolds from The Red Stocking Fund sent a very thoughtful note to our school for the funds our school put forward this year($2,630.17). The students purchased many “treasures” for loved ones during our event before our winter break. Thank you again to Laurie Jennings and her team for organizing and continuing this tradition.
For those of you attending the 8th Grade Auction I will see you there!

Happy Friday! I hope everyone is staying warm and safe with these unusual weather conditions.
It’s hard to believe we have almost reached February.
Short week due to last week’s storm, but lots of learning and smiles happening here at the Edgartown School.
The town, as well as the superintendent are watching the upcoming storm closely. If any cancellations or delays need to occur we will communicate out to families as early as possible.
If you see an Edgartown dept team member (highway, police, fire etc..) please make sure to thank them. We are very lucky to have such hardworking and dedicated community members keeping our town safe and ready during conditions like we have had. Our own school custodial crew worked tirelessly to get our building ready and will continue to prepare for any future storms.
7th Grade Ski Trip is postponed until February 10, 11, 12. The agenda will be sent out to families next week once all events are finalized. Pam Alwardt has worked hard in rescheduling everything for this event to still occur. Although some are disappointed with the delay, we are still excited for this opportunity.
Math Night– Postponed until March 26th 5:30 -7:00, Same excitement- just a new date.
Community Flyers: rather than emailing out community flyers each week, we will be posting them to a new section of our website called Friday Flyers, found here. You can bookmark this page. Newer flyers will always be posted to the top of this page and you can continue to scroll down to see flyers from previous weeks!
Stay safe and warm this weekend.

Happy Friday Edgartown families!
Lots of talk and opinions about the upcoming potential storm. So many students have added to conversations and insight to what they think will happen. Of course no one is hoping for a snow day.
If by chance the weather does not permit school to be in session, families will be notified by phone call, text and email. There would also be information on the top of our Edgartown website, once the Superintendent has made his decision. Messaging to families will be communicated Sunday night or early Monday morning if a cancellation or delay has occurred.
The next session of after school clubs was sent out earlier this week. Please make sure to fill out the survey/sign up if your child plans to attend any of these activities. Heather Heinz is the coordinating teacher this cycle so please reach out to her with any questions. Here is the link to her email: hheinz@mvyps.org
Thank you to all the 7th grade families that attended this year’s ski trip meeting. If you were unable to attend please know a phone call or in-person meeting will need to be scheduled next week. Thank you to families for understanding the importance of collaboration when planning an off-campus opportunity like this. Please reach out to me at kcampbell@mvyps.org to set up a time to touch base.
Big Math Night plans in the making! Mark your calendars for January 29th from 5:30 to 7:00. Pizza will be served in the cafe starting at 5:30 and we will move into the gym at 6:00 to start the math fun. Looking forward to seeing you all there.
Playground update: due to weather and some delays with materials being delivered, we are a few weeks behind with our opening. We are looking closer to the end of February for our actual opening. We continue to tell the students it is worth the wait as we are going to have an amazing playground here at the Edgartown School.

Happy Friday Edgartown Families-
Busy week with teaching and learning and lots of smiles. Fun Run and Community Meeting on Wednesday allowed us to come together as a school and celebrate good things that are happening. Our first graders shared a song that got everyone going. Our older students are doing an amazing job with their “buddies”. These classroom/grade partnerships are another layer of connection and creativity that makes our school special.
Our basketball teams are working hard and showing up. It’s not always about the win, but about who we are as a team and how we present ourselves as athletes. I am proud of our athletes and how they persevere and keep showing up as a team.
Last night at the All Island String Orchestra Concert, many of our talented students participated and shared their skills playing the violin, viola, cello, and bass. They have worked hard on their performances and should know the time and commitment to their instrument and ensemble was seen.

It was wonderful to welcome back all our students and staff this past Monday. The smiles and genuine excitement to be together was seen. The students shared special family holiday traditions and adventures as well as activities they were able to do over break. The staff and I were happy to see them all back together with us.

Happy Friday Edgartown School families,
Hopefully you have been watching our new playground project as closely as our students and have seen the excitement of the week. The sod has been set and the equipment is now starting to be put in place. Although we are starting to see the coming together of the new campus, please know all playground areas are still construction sites and are not to be entered. This is a priority for safety reasons, but also due to the ongoing installation work. The playgrounds will look almost complete soon, but will not be opened until after the New Year. We will have a phased opening in January with the younger playground and parts of the bigger playground opening first. The school fields will not be used until the spring. We plan to have the playground multi-court, structural equipment and access to the parks dept field opened in January. We are very excited and lucky to have this new playground for our students and our school community.
7th Grade Families– Ski Trip Update-please be on the look out for an email and envelope from Ms Alwardt today. Ms Alwardt is meeting with students to hand out envelopes including raffle tickets and important paperwork. Next week I will be meeting with all 7th grade students to begin discussions about expectations for the trip. These amazing opportunities at our school are privileges. Thank you to those who joined our UN Day event today. Mrs Convery did a spectacular job organizing this school tradition. Our school community came together to celebrate our cultures and what makes us special. Ms Knight was the guest speaker for 2025. She shared her heartfelt experience of recent time in Finland and how school is both alike and different across the world. Our oldest students were able to show representation of 59 UN flags, our 4th graders shared a poem “Flag of the UN” and everyone was able to recite the United Nations’ Declaration of the Rights of a Child in unison. It was a special and meaningful event for us here in Edgartown.
It was great to see so many families during family conferences this week. I hope the discussions were valuable and the vision for each child’s journey to grow and thrive was shared. We have a half day Monday, Oct. 27th for our last day of conferences.
PTA Message:
We are hosting games and concessions at this Sunday’s Happy Haunting at the Mini Park in downtown Edgartown from 10-1. We need some volunteers to help run the games and man the concession sales. Attached is a Google Form listing those opportunities. Any adult or 7th or 8th grader is welcome to sign up. All students will earn community service hours for their time, and there is potential to share the proceeds of their shift with their class fundraising efforts.
Please contact Brooke Leahy with any questions.

Happy Friday Edgartown!
Great week here at school. As routines and expectations solidify, classrooms are really getting down to business. The students and teachers are building relationships, celebrating successes and working through roadblocks when they occur. Lots of learning is taking place.
Over the past 2 weeks I have held grade level data meetings with teachers and support staff. We have analyzed beginning of the year assessments and begun to set 6-8 week goals for each student/grade level. We are reviewing ELA and Math benchmarks. If we determine students need more support in specific areas we will be identifying where this support will occur. The possibilities could be one or multiple areas of instruction including: in-class support, small pull-out group instruction or targeted instruction during WIN time. Each grade level has 30-40 minutes a day for WIN time “ what they need”. These learning opportunities during WIN will fluctuate during the school year as we progress monitor students skills. We will also include extension/ enrichment opportunities during WIN block for students who are currently scoring on or above benchmarks.Throughout the year students will be able to have different areas of focus as well as connect with topics they show strengths and interest in. WIN cycles will allow students to explore grade level standards at a deeper level. We will also be using feedback from students on their own areas of interest for WIN opportunities. This type of learning will allow students to have more voice and connection to content as well as transferring skills and knowledge into real world situations. Please feel free to reach out with any questions you have as WIN will look different than in years past.
Parent Teacher Conferences are on the calendar(Oct. 21. 23, and 27) where you and your child’s teacher can discuss your child’s strengths and areas of focus more in depth. A separate email was sent this morning with information on how/when to sign up for parent conferences. Please reach out to Mrs Naron in the office if you have any questions or need any help.
Arrival and Dismissal– please remember school starts at 8:10. Doors open at 7:30 for breakfast. We know mornings can be tough but please try to get your child here on time.
Afternoon pick up- please follow the staff guiding cars in line. We are trying to make the process go as safety and as quickly as possible. Students need to get in and out of the car on the side that meets the sidewalk.
Registration Packets– As of today we only have about 50% of these packets returned. Please make sure to complete these important forms and return as soon as possible.
After School Clubs sign up was sent earlier this week. In case you missed it the link is below. Lots of choices for kids- hopefully something for everyone!

Smiles all around this week! Picture Day was a success. Despite the rain- we were able to get class pictures done outside, while individuals were being taken inside in the cafe. If you missed picture day there will be a make-up date. More information about a make up day will be coming.
Our First Fun Run and Community Meeting of the year started today. I was excited to be a part of this special tradition. The fun run had both serious competitors and walkers chatting with friends. It was a geat way to come together as a community. Thank you to Mrs McDonald for the organization and the encouragement for all to participate.
Our community meeting was led with recognition of students who have stood out by following our core values. We celebrated our entire school community for recognizing the importance of kindness and respect and what it looks like in different aspects of the day. We will continue to focus on setting high expectations for our choices as well as supporting students on what they can do differently when needed. We believe if a student struggles making a good decision, we will reset the direction and help support the students in meeting the expectation. Some of the schoolwide expectations include how we treat each other, listening to our teachers, the way we travel and take care of our school building, our styles of communication- are we being respectful and kind when we talk to one another in class, the cafe, recess etc… When we identify collective goals and hold ourselves to these standards, our school becomes a healthy successful environment to learn and grow in. Please talk at home about kindness and respect as the students shared that they should be carrying these values beyond school to both home and the community. We have amazing students at the Edgartown School- we want them to be the best they can be.
Part of the community meeting also celebrates special school lessons, events or accomplishments from our students. We shared Derby WInner McCabe Neadow as well as listened to a few of our talented musicians with a song written and performed by the student group and Mr Nascimento. Way to go Edgartown School!
Anyone in need of a bike helmet? All sizes and styles available from a generous community donation. Please have your child check out the gently used bike helmets at lunch time if they are in need of a new one.
Have a great weekend everyone.

Another great week here at the Edgartown School. Lots of smiles and conversation as we get back into the groove of school. We continue to focus on our core values and what kindness and respect look like, feel like and sound like. Students have done well in making connections with different aspects of our school day. Please continue to ask your child about their day – there are great things happening in our classrooms and our school community.
The playground project is well underway and moving along as planned. The students are able to watch the daily progress as they make their way down to the town parks playground. The multi-court and basketball hoops have already been recognized by the students. It will be fun to see what next week brings. Will share some updated pictures of the project next week.

School Advisory Board– if you are interested in being a part of the Edgartown School Advisory Board for the upcoming school year, please reach out to Mrs Campbell. Our first meeting will be Oct.14th at 10:30am.
In Massachusetts, a School Advisory Council, is typically composed of parents, teachers, community members, and school administrators. Their primary responsibilities include:
- School Improvement Planning: The council collaborates with the school principal to develop, review, and revise the school’s improvement plan. This plan outlines strategies for enhancing student performance and achieving educational goals.
- Budget Review and Recommendations: The council reviews the school’s budget and makes recommendations to ensure that financial resources align with the priorities outlined in the school improvement plan.
- Policy and Program Development: The council provides input on school policies and programs, ensuring they meet the needs of the student population and align with district and state educational goals.
- Community Engagement: The council serves as a bridge between the school and the community, fostering communication and encouraging parental and community involvement in school activities and decision-making processes.
- Review of School Handbook: The council often participates in reviewing and suggesting changes to the school’s student and parent handbook, ensuring that policies are clear and fair.
If you served on the SAC last year, please know we would love to have you be part of the council this year as well.
Have a great weekend! Beautiful weather ahead.

Happy Friday Edgartown Families!
What an amazing first week of school at the Edgartown School. Staff, students and families worked together as we transitioned back from summer. I have really enjoyed getting to know students and families these past few days. Thank you to our staff for the time and dedication getting our classrooms and school ready for our students.
I have been able to meet with all grade levels (kindergarten next week) and start conversations about our school core values. We discussed the meanings and connections of KINDNESS and RESPECT and why these values are important for students, staff and a successful school . We shared what these values mean as a community, what they look like for us as students within classes, how we treat each other, and how we transfer these values out into the bigger community. Please ask your child if they remember these conversations and how they can carry these values over to family and friends outside of the school day. As the year continues, we will recognize the importance of other core values and how they build our school community into an environment we are all proud to be a part of.
Thank you to the PTA for the warm welcome back sign and the parent coffee hour. What a wonderful surprise for everyone as they arrived back to school. Thank you to Rosewater for the teacher’s treats. Everyone was feeling the positive energy and thoughtfulness.

Outdoor Learning/Playground Project– is now underway! A very exciting time for our school as we embark on this project. The students have done a good job being flexible as we move down to the Town Park playground/fields for recess.
We are communicating to the town that due to our school project the Robinson Road Recreation Area will need to be closed 9:00am until 2:00pm Monday-Friday. Thank you for the understanding and the collaboration.
Please remember to check our school website for upcoming events. I will include upcoming weekly events, but you may want to mark your calendars with important future dates.
Tuesday, September 9th 8:30-9:30 Coffee and Conversation with Mrs Campbell. Feel free to stop by and share ideas, hopes and community connections for the upcoming school year.
Wednesday, September 10th 4:30pm School Committee held in the school library.
It appears the students and Shea the school therapy dog have already created a positive bond. Lots of smiles from our students as they get to know one of our newest staff members.

Have a fabulous weekend! Please reach out if you have any questions or if I can assist you in any way.

Message from Mrs McDonald to students in 5th-8th grade:
Hello Families,
I am excited to be starting Open Gym on the first day of school! For those of you unfamiliar with Open Gym, it is a time for kids to get some movement in before school starts. It is open to all students in grades 5-8 from 7:30 am- 8:10 am. Here are the rules and expectations for all students who wish to participate. Students do not need to sign up or commit to coming, and they can get here anytime before 8:10. The biggest rule is if your child is having breakfast at the school, they must do that first, they cannot come to the gym and then leave for breakfast.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns!
Have a great day,
Megan McDonald
Safety Drills- we will be having safety drills throughout the school year. Our first fire drill will be within the first 3 days of school. The staff and students will know about the drill, discuss and review what the procedures will include. Our Edgartown Police and Fire deptartments work closely with the school as safety is always a priority. I will send out a family communication after a drill is complete.

We will send out the lunch menu each month and post on the school website. Without a doubt, our very special school member Gina Debettencourt runs the best kitchen around!

One of Edgartown’s newest staff-
Shea the School Therapy Dog- Starting this year the Edgartown School will have a school therapy dog as part of the school community. Shea has been a school therapy dog for the past 3 years in Attleboro, MA. She has gone through extensive training and is certified to work in schools, hospitals and any areas of need. She has worked with ages 3 to 93. Her role is to bring smiles to a school community. Mrs Campbell, along with staff will be talking to students the first week about Shea and what it means to have a school therapy dog. Please know there will never be a time where students are required to interact with Shea. She is a 4 year old hypoallergenic bernadoodle who has brought smiles to many students and staff during her time as a therapy dog. Shea will either be with Mrs Campbell or Mr Butler throughout the school day. If families have any questions, concerns or worries about their child and interactions with Shea please reach out. If you would like your child to have no interactions with Shea please also let Mrs Campbell know and that request would of course be respected.

Dear Edgartown School Families,
I would like to introduce myself as the new principal of the Edgartown School. I am very excited to be here and become a contributing member of our school community. These past 7 weeks have been full as I collaborate with staff and listen to the many wonderful aspects of our school. I look forward to bringing my 33 years experience to a very special place I now call home. I can’t wait to meet all our students on September 2nd!
My primary focus as your principal is to build strong, meaningful relationships with students, staff, and families. I believe that every child deserves to be seen, heard, and supported in a way that empowers them to reach their full potential. A strong school community shines when each child feels valued and encouraged to excel. Identifying and building systems of learning opportunities for all students is a focus I have worked hard on in my career, and I look forward to collaborating with teachers to strengthen systems here at the Edgartown School.
Communication is key to our success, and I am dedicated to establishing clear, two-way channels between the school and families. My goal is to ensure you are informed and updated as the year progresses. I want families to feel confident sharing thoughts and insights, asking questions big and small, and feeling comfortable when difficult conversations need to be had. I believe working through challenges when they arise usually gets us to a better place.
Looking ahead, I am excited to explore opportunities for families to share their perspectives on what makes our school special and to express hopes and dreams for our students. Your input is invaluable as we plan for the future of the Edgartown School. I am eager to get to know each family, build trust, and instill confidence in my role as your school leader. I encourage you to reach out whenever needed. One of the best aspects of my role is the ability to work alongside teachers and families as we support and celebrate our children.
I look forward to embarking on this exciting journey with you all. More updates are coming soon!
Warm regards,
Kate D. Campbell
